The Mordavia History of Events: A Time Line is a QFG4-related timeline by Lori and Corey Cole. It was published in the official Quest for Glory: Shadows of Darkness Hintbook. It contains the history of Mordavia and is a timeline of events leading up to the beginning of Quest For Glory IV. It gives no specific dates but rather lists the order of events. Some of the specific dates that relate to this timeline appear elsewhere in the hintbook, as well as within the game itself (and in some cases other games in the series).

One of the more noteable aspects of this official timeline is that it clearly shows what appears to be a clear extended period of time of 3/4 years (paradox, anachronism or discrepancy) which occurred in the 'canon' between the time the time the hero disappeared from the Lost City, and years later when the Dark Master and Ad Avis actually cast (finished) the spell that brought him to Mordavia. This order of events clearly contrasts with the equally offical alternate Short timeline.

This timeline is the basis for the Long timeline (which includes information from all the games).

This timeline has been adjusted for historical timing (year 1) rather than astronomical timing (year 0).

Mordavia History of Events - A Time LineEdit

(Leading up to the beginning of the game)

  • Mordavia is ruled by Boyar Sergei Borgov.
  • Drawn by the magic of this valley, the Mad Monk Amon Tillado brings his 'Cult of the Dark One' into Mordavia.
  • The Mad Monk convinces Sergei Borgov to join his cult.
  • The cult constructs the the Dark One Monastery in town.
  • In the land of Silmaria, a young wizard (Ad Avis) seeks out the Dark Master (Katrina) to gain forbidden knowledge.
  • In Mordavia, Amon Tillado grows increasingly mad as he creates the Seven Rituals to Summon Avoozl.
  • Amon Tillado is found dead in a pool of blood beside the Necrophilicon.
  • Borgov takes over the cult, and conceals copies of the rituals throughout the land, retaining the only copy of the Essence Ritual himself.
  • Borgov leads the cult to a cave south of town to summon Avoozl.
  • The archmage Erana senses Avoozl's awakening, and contacts the Paladin Piotyr.
  • Piotyr leads an army into Mordavia, as Erana battles Avoozl in the 'place between worlds'.
  • As the Cult members perform the Rituals to summon Avoozl, the cave begins to transform, forming a huge body for Avoozl to inhabit this world.
  • Soldiers and cult members alike die horribly as the cave absorbs their essences for energy.
  • Dark Magic transforms the remaining cult members into monsters (Chernovy).
  • Piotyr battles with the transformed Borgov-monster to prevent him from performing the last Ritual.
  • Erana closes the gate between worlds, but fails to banish Avoozl completely.
  • Erana's soul and Avoozl are trapped together between worlds.
  • Sergei Borgov, still a monster, flees into the darkness of the cave.
  • Piotyr finds Erana's Staff, and escapes the cave just as the Mouth shuts.
  • Piotyr makes it to town before collapsing from his wounds.
  • When he is healed, Piotyr places Erana's Staff in the town center, so that its magic can protect the town.
  • Piotyr learns that Erana's soul is trapped between worlds, and attempts to locate the rituals of summoning. He is killed by a Barrow Wraith who guards one of the rituals.
  • Dark Magic continues to leak from the Dark One's Cave, distorting the land, and causing monsters to breed.
  • Years later, the Dark Master enters Mordavia, drawn by the lure of the dark magic and rumors of Avoozl. She takes over Castle Borgov.
  • Ad Avis is killed in Raseir by the Hero, and the Dark Master summons his body to Mordavia, so that he will be her Vampire Slave.
  • Boris Stovich becomes the Gatekeeper of Castle Borgov.
  • The Dark Master has the monster Toby lure the Child Tanya from Hotel Mordavia in town.
  • Tanya becomes the Dark Master's 'daughter'.
  • The Dark Master summons rainstorms to block off Mordavia from the outside world.
  • The Dark Master learns that she needs the 'Seven Rituals of Summoning' to draw Avoozl into this world. The Dark Master wants night to last forever, so that she will never be helpless in her coffin again.
  • The Dark Master locates and takes the Mouth ritual, hidden in the arch by the Dark One's Cave.
  • The Dark Master and Ad Avis cast Entrapment and Teleport spells to summon a Hero to find the missing Rituals.
  • The dark magic of the Dark One's Cave distorts the Teleport spell, and thus the Hero appears in the Dark One's Cave itself instead of in the castle.
  • The Dark Master senses the distortion of her spell, and waits outside the cave to use the Mouth Ritual should the Hero be able to reach the cave mouth. She decides to bide her time and see if she can convince the Hero to help her.
  • So begins the game...

QFG4 timelineEdit

This section includes the above information with more specific dates/infomration from the QFG4 Hintbook, QFG4 and QFG4 manual added in (with additional related material from other QFG games).

Between 300 and 400 years ago:
The Boyars come into power in Mordavia. They start collecting records of their rule.[1]
Note: The exact date of when last Boyar disappeared is not known, but he could have disappeared anywhere over or between 74 or 54-57 years before QFG4. Using those dates as starting point one can add the 250 years of Boyar records to come a range of possible dates for when the Boyar's began (304 to 324), but could be older than that but more than likely not less than 300 and over 400 years before QFG4.
74 years ago (70 BQFG):
Ad Avis begins searching for knowledge about the evil Djinn Iblis, and begins to prepare for the day of prophecy of his return in seventy years. He first meets the Dark Master and begins to train with her (QFG2).[2]
Note: In QFG2 Ad Avis says he served the Dark Master for 70 years. In QFG4, Katrina states that he served her 50 years before he left her.
Between 74 and 57 years ago:
Mordavia is ruled by Boyar Sergei Borgov.
Drawn by the magic of this valley, the Mad Monk Amon Tillado brings his 'Cult of the Dark One' into Mordavia.
The Mad Monk convinces Sergei Borgov to join his cult.
The cult constructs the the Dark One Monastery in town.
Note: these dates occur before or at about about 57 years before QFG4 (or at the most 74 years before QFG4), the dates that Ad Avis began searching for power from the Dark Master. They are intended to occur not long before Ad Avis sought out the Dark Master. They are likely only within a few years to a couple of decades at the most before that event or they would be too far removed from the related events that take place after Ad Avis joined the Dark master.
57 years ago (54 BQFG):
In the land of Silmaria, a young wizard (Ad Avis) seeks out the Dark Master to gain forbidden knowledge.[3] She trained the young magician, in the dark arts and gave him "Life Eternal after Death", the mark of the Vampire, but did not kill him, and enslaved him to her will.[4]
Note: Katrina mentions in QFG4 that Ad Avis had been her follower for 50 years until she released him (he fled to Raseir shortly after being released some 1-3 years before QFG2). Depending on when Ad Avis made it to Raseir this date could technically between 54 and 57 years before QFG4.
Between 57 years and 15 years ago
In Mordavia, Amon Tillado grows increasingly mad as he creates the Seven Rituals to Summon Avoozl.
Amon Tillado is found dead in a pool of blood beside the Necrophilicon.
Borgov takes over the cult, and conceals copies of the rituals throughout the land, retaining the only copy of the Essence Ritual himself.
Borgov leads the cult to a cave south of town to summon Avoozl.
The archmage Erana senses Avoozl's awakening, and contacts the Paladin Piotyr.
Piotyr leads an army into Mordavia, as Erana battles Avoozl in the 'place between worlds'.
As the Cult members perform the Rituals to summon Avoozl, the cave begins to transform, forming a huge body for Avoozl to inhabit this world.
Soldiers and cult members alike die horribly as the cave absorbs their essences for energy.
Dark Magic transforms the remaining cult members into monsters (Chernovy).
Piotyr battles with the transformed Borgov-monster to prevent him from performing the last Ritual.
Erana closes the gate between worlds, but fails to banish Avoozl completely.
Erana's soul and Avoozl are trapped together between worlds.
Sergei Borgov, still a monster, flees into the darkness of the cave.
Piotyr finds Erana's Staff, and escapes the cave just as the Mouth shuts.
Piotyr makes it to town before collapsing from his wounds.
When he is healed, Piotyr places Erana's Staff in the town center, so that its magic can protect the town.
Piotyr learns that Erana's soul is trapped between worlds, and attempts to locate the rituals of summoning. He is killed by a Barrow Wraith who guards one of the rituals.
Dark Magic continues to leak from the Dark One's Cave, distorting the land, and causing monsters to breed.
The Dark Master moves into the castle for the first time.
Dr. Cranium moves into Mordavia.[5]
Note: These events occur after Ad Avis sought out the Dark Master and thus must take place less than 54-57 years before QFG4 (or less than 74 years at the most). The earliest of these events likely didn't take much more than a few years after the related events set before Ad Avis joined the Dark Master, otherwise they would be too far removed from each other.
Note: The Dark Master moves into Mordavia (and likely into the empty castle) before Anna died (likely after Piotyr was killed, or he likely would have looked into the rumors), she would have left later (but in total she lived decades there).
Note: Dr. Cranium would have have had to have moved into the valley before Anna died. It is unknown if the Dark Master came to Mordavia before or after Cranium did (but it would have had to have been before Anna's death to be decades, although Anna does not comment on any strangers).
15 years ago (11 BQFG):
Anna dies in the forest while out looking for berries for Dr. Cranium (QFG4).[6]
Burgomeister begins to look after Nikolai.[7]
Between 15 and 5 years ago:
Olga and Nickolai are married.[8]
Note:Olga and Boris married some point before the Dark Master again moved into Mordavia, and before the rains began.
7 years ago (3 BQFG):
Ad Advis is released from Katrina's service (QFG4). Ad Avis fled to Raseir, hoping to gain enough power that he would never die and have to serve Katrina. He became Vizier to the Emir of Raseir (QFG2, QFG4 Hintbook, 30, 44)[9]
Note: It is explained elsewhere QFG4 Hintbook that Ad Avis fled to Raseir right after he was released. He made it to Raseir 1-3 years before Iblis prophecy, and took over (QFG1EGA[10], QFG2).
5 years ago (1 BQFG):
Years later, the Dark Master enters Mordavia, drawn by the lure of the dark magic and rumors of Avoozl. She takes over Castle Borgov. Katrina moved into Castle Borgov in Mordavia five years ago because she heard rumors of the Cult of the Dark One (QFG4 Hintbook, pg 30).[11]
Gypsies move into Mordavia after hearing rumors that the Borgov family was again inhabiting Borgov Castle. They brought their wagons to Mordavia, thinking that the old Boyar's son had returned, and they could trade with him again.[12] Initially they had very little luck contacting anyone, and they would have left early but flooding affected their travel[13].
Ad Avis overthrows the Emir of Vizier, sets up his own puppet, and becomes the true ruler of the kingdom. (QFG2)
Note: The QFG4 hintbook places the date of when Dark Master moved into Castle Borgov at 5 years before QFG4, the Gypsies also confirm this date. Gypsy Davey seems to claim that they would have left early, but rains had already flooded the pass. Magda later claims that they couldn't leave because rains destroyed the road shortly after they met the Gatekeeper (about two years later).
4 years ago (1 QFG):
Ad Avis is killed in Raseir, and the Dark Master summons his body to Mordavia, so that he will be her Vampire Slave (QFG2 ends).
Vampiric strangers including Ad Avis moves into the castle(QFG4).[14] The pass to Mordavia is blocked and Mordavian coinage bottoms out (QFG3).[15]
The townspeople hear new rumors of vampires, lead by a stranger, a Dark Master who moved into the castle.(QFG4).[16]
The Hero saves Tarna (QFG3).
Erasmus learns of the Dark Master had settled into Mordavia, making it dangerous for tourists that year.
The Adventurer's Guild is locked up around this time, as very few to no adventurers could make it past the treacherous swamp (but not before a copy of the HERO Magazine, Issue IV, is put into the guild's bookshelf).[17]
3 years ago (2 QFG):
Boris Stovich becomes the Gatekeeper of Castle Borgov. Olga thought he died.[18]
After two years, the Gypsies, having never saw any sign of the Boyar's son, finally meet the Gatekeeper and trade with him, soon after the rains began to fall. They were stuck in the valley since flooding washed out the road.[19][20]
Note: The gypsies apparently moved in before Boris became Gatekeeper some two years before, and before the rains were summoned (though technically Boris states that the swamp was there before he left his wife.[21]). The innkeeper states that they have been living in the valley for many years.
2 years ago (2 QFG):
The Dark Master has the monster Toby lure the Child Tanya from Hotel Mordavia in town.[22]
Tanya becomes the Dark Master's 'daughter'.
Following rumors, Yuri Markarov looked for his daugther at the Gypsy camp, but found no sign of her there.[23]
1 year ago (4 QFG):
Dr. Cranium receives the last shipment of supplies before the pass becomes impassible.[24]
Present (5 QFG):
Dr. Cranium travels Spielburg during the Summer to collect Antwerp samples, from an antwerp explosion during the spring (QFG4). Soon after the pass is completely blocked (QFG4).[25]
The Dark Master summons rainstorms to block off Mordavia from the outside world.
Baba Yaga comes to Mordavia to spend the winter.[26]
The Dark Master learns that she needs the 'Seven Rituals of Summoning' to draw Avoozl into this world. The Dark Master wants night to last forever, so that she will never be helpless in her coffin again.
The Dark Master locates and takes the Mouth ritual, hidden in the arch by the Dark One's Cave.
The Dark Master and Ad Avis cast Entrapment and Teleport spells to summon a Hero to find the missing Rituals.
The dark magic of the Dark One's Cave distorts the Teleport spell, and thus the Hero appears in the Dark One's Cave itself instead of in the castle.
The Dark Master senses the distortion of her spell, and waits outside the cave to use the Mouth Ritual should the Hero be able to reach the cave mouth. She decides to bide her time and see if she can convince the Hero to help her.
Note: The timing of the rains is given differently by different characters. Boris and Tanya suggest it happened before she was kidnapped.[27] While Gypsy Magda suggests it occured after Gatekeeper was hired, or possibly after Tanya., Dr. Cranium and QFG4 hintbook seem to suggest it was blocked off after Tanya was kidnapped. Also note that the exact timing of when Katrina learned about the Seven Rituals, or when she found the Mouth Ritual are not clear, and could have occured as early as two years before before QFG4, or shortly before QFG4 begins (after Dr. Cranium made his trip to Spielburg). it is also known that it has been raining for at least a few years.[28]The HERO Journal issue suggests valley was already flooded when it was published, and notes Katrina moved into the valley within the year of its printing (a copy was locked away in the Adventurer's Guild for several years since the floods, as well as a stairstepper advertised in the issue).

UnknownEdit

The Dark Master is expelled from WIT.[29]

Katrina lives in Mordavia for decades, and believed herself the ruler there (perhaps implying that was living in the castle). She would have had to live there at least 20 years. She was certainly living in the castle before Anna died, some 15 years before QFG4. Perhaps she lived there as early as when the Borgov's were living there. But after they died off, she certainly believed herself to be the new ruler.(QFG5). More than likely she moved in after Pyotyr was killed, or he more than likely would have persued any rumors of her moving into the area.[30]
Note: QFG4 confirms that Katrina moved into castle between 5 and 4 years before QFG4. But apparently as the Dark Master lived there as far back as 15 years ago (though they thought that was someone else, a man). QFG5's information could suggest she moved there much earlier, or at least lived in the land early on. It says she had been living there for decades. The Time Line above also shows that she was living in Silmaria (or at least was visiting there) for a while when Ad Avis met her.

Additional Notes:Edit

In this timeline, some events may have been given more than one date. Many of these fall into order fine, by following the timeline's context, that QFG4 takes place 3-4 years after QFG3. However, the timing of when the rain began, has the worst issues in this time line's order of events, as there are several references to when it began and when it ended from various characters points of view in the the game, as well as the view given in this timeline.
Inside the Adventurer's Guild is an old copy of the Hero Magazine : Issue IV - The Journal of General Job Adjusting, the same issue included in the QFG4 box. According to the Burgomeister, the Adventure's guild has been abandoned for many years, since the swamp. Which suggests it had to be published at least 4-5 years before the game.[31][32] Inside the physical issue there is an article with Erasmus that may suggest that the issue was published the same year that the Dark Master moved into Mordavia[33]. It also mentions that the swamp is already blocking the pass, and that events in Tarna had already taken place[34]. Therefore it had to have been brought in by one of the few adventurers who found a way past the swamp that the Burgomeister mentions, before he locked up the guild. In addition the Adventurer's guild has one of the stair steppers advertised in the issue, and its been there a while collecting dust. So who ever brought the issue in, must have also ordered the stair stepper and brought it in as well.
The journal & stair stepper are several years old, and the events of QFG2 and QFG3 occur before Boris became the gatekeeper in this Time Line. This would place these events and details three years or more before QFG4.
According to Boris Stovich the rains began before he left his wife Olga. According to the Magda, the rains began after they began trading with the gatekeeper[35], according to Davey it was just after they entered the valley, according to Tanya the rains began before she was kidnapped, according to History of Events the rains began after she was kidnapped. According to the money changer in QFG3 the pass was blocked during that game (as much as four years before according to this timeline). Cranium seems to suggest that he's gotten supplies from the pass over a year ago (apparently within the second year before the game based on his wording). Most characters agree it rained a "few years" or "many years", so it had to be at least two years. It could not be any less and was apparently more than that.
Perhaps the blocking of the path was gradual, first the roads were washed out, blocking any wagon travel. Then according to Dmitri what was left of the road became overgrown with plants and/or flooded by the swamp[36], perhaps blocking off all foot travel. Once completely blocked off, not even adventurers could get in, and the guild was locked up.
It is also clear, that for Katrina to have lived in Mordavia for decades she would have had to live there for at least 20 years.
QFG2 says that Ad Avis served Katrina for seventy years, and QFG4 says that Ad Avis served Katrina for only 50 years. Katrina in QFG4 implies that he met and served her 50 years, until she grew bored of him. It may be possible to interpret that Ad Avis met the Dark Master and joined her 70 years ago, around the time he learned about Iblis for the first time (then left 20 years later). Although that would still be a problem as he technically wasn't serving her during last twenty years period, and it took him a long while before he finally made it to Raseir and got into power.
However, the QFG4 hintbook, and ingame suggests that Ad Avis headed to and over Raseir about the same time he was released from Katrina to prepare for coming Iblis. Also according to information in QFG1EGA and QFG2 Ad Avis may have entered Raseir between 1-3 years before QFG2 which would affect the date (Shameen says they moved away from Raseir three years before QFG1, in QFG2 they say they left around the time things were turning bad in Raseir, and Ferrari says he moved into Raseir one and half years before QFG2 as the situation was right for his line of work[37], finally the Emir disappeared one year before QFG2 and Ad Avis took control[38][39]). Likewise Dahab Khalis[40] and the katta in QFG5 suggest that things were bad in Raseir for several years.[41]
Another possiblity is that Ad Avis studied under the Dark Master for twenty years, then challenged Katrina, at which point he was enslaved, and forced to serve her without choice for another 50 years. These details and interpretations would affect the order of some of the events.
One other thing of note is that this timeline of events, and elsewhere in the QFG4 Hintbook suggests that Ad Avis was given life eternal after death, and was first enslaved, while he was with the Dark Master in Silmaria, and that she came to Mordavia sometime afterwords. But was still 'living' up to his physical death, when he arose as a nosferatu.
How long Ad Avis has lived in the castle since his death is not clear. In QFG4 there are references that may suggest that he moved in several years before the game, one character (Olga) suggests that the strangers (plural) to the castle moved in four years before the game, a stranger (singular), however, the Dark Master apparently had lived their much longer (at least 15 years before, based on information from Dr. Cranium) according to accounts by Anna and Nikolai. Infact there are references when the Hero encounters the Wizard, that suggest a long period of time had occured since they had met.[42] The only 'strangers' (but not strangers to him) living in the castle as confirmed by Boris Stovich, is the Master (Katrina), the strange foreigner (Ad Avis), the Master's daughter (actually Tanya), and two rather strange guards (Goon Guards). There is also Toby, and one must include the Gatekeeper himself. However, it should be noted as clarified by many character comments when they say 'strangers' they mean vampires (and do not know about any other inhabitant, although some know about Toby, but not where he lives). In this case they mean at least the Dark Master, and Ad Avis.[43]

Behind the scenesEdit

According to this timeline 3-4 years passed between the point when Ad Avis died, and when the game begins. It is unclear why it took the hero so long to be transported from the Lost City, until the point in time that he was deposited in the Dark One's cave. At first appearances it is unclear if this was due to speed of the spell and distance being travelled to, time dilation, time travel or that the teleport spell took a very long time to to complete by the casters.

There are references within QFG4 that seem to support that much time passed between QFG2 and QFG4.[44] As well as in QFG5.[45] In addition there is the Hero Journal and stair stepper evidence in QFG4. However, references to antwerp explosions before the games in QFG4 and QFG5 would suggest a one year interpretation. Either case there is a bit of an anachronism or discrepency going on.

Strangely, this timeline clearly shows that the Dark Master and Ad Avis actually had cast (or finished casting) the spell to teleport the Hero several years after he had already vanished from the Lost City (which may show a clear paradox). Or at least they had been working on the spell for several years, and it took several years to complete.

If this situation shows clear case of time dilation within the spell (time moving faster outside the spell than inside of it), or actual time travel (hero literally is summoned from the past by individuals from the future, and brought forward 3-4 years into the future), or that time actually moves at different rates in individual lands, bubbles of isolated time periods is unclear (see Lost in Space movie or the Sea of Time in Chrono Cross for examples).

As Corey Cole points out that at least in original intent, there was no idea of Time Travel considered, and that the stories were intended to take in a linear fashion over an unspecified amount of time (suggesting that not even the "one year" chronology as shown in the Short timeline is specifically set in stone) and that the series may take place over longer than a year;

Ref time travel - If the designers count when it comes to canon, I can say that no time travel was intended. As far as we're concerned, the five-game Quest for Glory series takes place in linear order, with an unspecified amount of time between each pair of games. The Hero does not necessarily arrive immediately in the next adventure location.
The only possible ambiguity is the question of how the Dark Master's summoning spell worked. That is not well defined, so time or alternate-universe travel is possible. If so, Erasmus's spell that transports the Hero to Silmaria might have "cleaned up" the dimensional side-effects of the Dark Master's spell.[46]

Another implication of this is that a much longer period of time may have passed between QFG1 and 2 than is made clear (as well as longer periods between transportation spells in other games).
