Griffin (aka Gryphon) are a crossbreed between lions and eagles. The largest type of Gryphon is known as a Giant Gryphon.

The griffin is a highly intelligent creature that physically resembles a cross between an eagle and a lion. Griffins seldom attack humans unless provoked, but when angered will not forget an enemy. It is difficult to kill, and will retreat from battle if seriously injured. Griffins can be found nesting on the rocky ledges of the mountains surrounding the desert regions.
Griffin feathers, representing change (as the creature is a mix between bird and cat) are powerful magical components and can be used to make a dispel potion.
Griffins apparently speak Griffin-speak, which is taught as part of Famous Adventurer's Correspondence Course in 'Griffin 101'.
The Hero encounters only one Griffin in his travel: Merv, of Shapeir.
