The Goblin Central Combat Training Zone (also known as the Goblin Ambush [1] ) is a point of interest in Spielburg Valley. It is featured in Quest for Glory I VGA.

Background[]

The Goblin Central Combat Training Zone is where Goblins go to train. Many adventures have wondered where all the goblins there were coming from, but never took the time to worry about it. It's just one of those little unsolved mysteries of the universe.

Known also as the Goblin Ambush, this is where Goblins ambush adventurers.

Bruno will discuss the area if you ask him about Goblins.[2]

In-Game Interactions[]

This clearing is found three screen lengths west of Heinrich's Farm.

The first time the Hero enters the area, he'll be stalked by a rather strange walking bush with horns sticking out of it. The Hero can fight and kill the Goblin, then leave. When he returns to the area, Goblins will march out of their hiding spots to attack. Every time the Hero returns to this area, the number of Goblins he has to face will increase by one. The Goblins will line up behind each other in the combat screen, and the Hero will have to fight them in succession with no stopping (making it very challenging for Heroes with low Stamina).

In the EGA version, there appears to be no limit to the maximum amount of Goblins the Hero can face. In the VGA version, the maximum number of Goblins is eight.

Once the Hero defeats all the Goblins, their bodies will be scattered about the area, and he will be able to search them. The Goblins all fall in pre-determined spots and the number of silvers each has on them is related to where they fall.

The amount of silvers that can be collectively found per visit is as follows:

  • 1 Goblin: 5 silvers
  • 2 Goblins: 4 silvers
  • 3 Goblins: 17 silvers
  • 4 Goblins: 44 silvers
  • 5 Goblins: 52 silvers
  • 6 Goblins: 56 silvers

A maximum number of eight bodies will appear. The seventh and eighth bodies will have no money.

If the Hero runs from the Goblin fights at any time, the bodies will not appear. The number of Goblins to fight will also be reset.

Behind the scenes[]

  • In the EGA version, typing search will tell you if you are frigid, cold, warm or HOT, leading you behind the rocks. Searching there, will tell you that you discover a Goblin cave that is too small to enter. It was originally supposed to be a fully explorable underground Goblin Maze, but was cut due to both limits of space and development time.[3] Indeed, if you attempt to open it (type smash cave), the narration will state "Maybe next game. We're behind schedule."
  • The VGA version is the first time the area is called the "Goblin Central Combat Training Zone", there is no mention of the cave, and the narration considers the goblins' origin unimportant.
  • Readme (Collection) mentions the Goblins' Hole it claims is a place in the forest that the players cannot actually reach.
