Good luck charm

Will fortune smile upon you?

Luck is an Ability. It is a measure of how lucky the Hero is. It is allegedly most useful for the Thief and ties into the following factors:

  • Monster encounter rate
  • Success rate of various Thief skills
  • Slightly affects the price ceilings while haggling
  • Slightly affects the accuracy of throws at the Wheel of Fortune
  • Affects the chance that you will win a bet placed on a match you do not watch
  • Possibly others

General[]

The only proof that Luck has any effect is an assurance by the games that "a lucky Hero will have a lucky game". Luck gives a random factor (in favor of the Hero) to skill checks as well as combat. In some cases (eg. when a skill check failed), there is a random roll against the Luck ability. If Luck is equal or higher than the roll, the Hero gains a small bonus to the check, aiding him to pass it.

This means that a Hero who has high Luck (and relatively low other abilities) will sometimes be able to pass some feats that are higher than his skill. For example a Thief might be able to climb a tree, thanks to Luck, but the next few times he will try, he will be unable.

It is said by the games that Luck is drawn against when performing Thief skills.

Training[]

The Ability is considered to be "trained", every time a Luck roll is made by the game engine in the background, therefore the more the Luck stat is employed, the more it can be increased.

This means that there is no specific method to train the ability. Combat (specifically dodging) seems to help. Certain games train luck faster than others. In Quest for Glory I and Quest for Glory V, the Luck stat increases rather quickly compared to other combat-related stats, while it increases a bit more slowly in Quest for Glory II. In Quest for Glory III and IV, the Luck stat increases very slowly.

In Quest for Glory 1, Luck can be increased by throwing projectiles at the Archery Range by the city gates.

In Quest for Glory 2 Luck is increased when you tell about past to the Astrologer. It seems also to increase after the first meeting with Ferrari. Like all Abilities and Skills, Luck can be increased by 50 using the Djinni Wish.

In Quest for Glory 5 luck can be increased by practicing your throwing ability, and casting spells.

Equipment[]

In Quest for Glory 5, the Good Luck Charm (pictured at the top) raises the Hero's luck by 50 while equipped.
