Food items include Food Rations, Rations and other food items are survival items in the Quest for Glory series. Specialized rations are featured in some fashion in every game except Quest for Glory 5.

Background[]

Food Rations are generally foodstuffs that are either non-perishable or otherwise preserved. While QFG1-3 have the hero start the game with initial ratios, only QFG1 and QFG4 lets him actually buy pure ratios since only they have general stores. Adventurers will typically carry a supply to keep themselves fed while traveling. Common items found in rations include dried meat, dried fruit, or bread items.

In-Game Use[]

The Hero needs to carry rations in order to stay alive in the wilderness. These rations can take different forms depending on the game. In most games, the Hero will automatically consume one ration per day, unless he has eaten a meal in another manner, such as eating at an inn.

Food can also be use as a gift or bribe when given to other people or animals.

Eating some food is actually misleading or deadly, in particular the mushroom and Venomous Vine Fruit that either serve as poison or even kill instantly.

Quest for Glory I[]

Foodration1

The Hero begins his quest with five Food Rations of nondescript type. He can purchase more packs of ten for five silvers at the Dry Goods & General Store. While technically the Hero can also get and eat a mushroom for free, it either kills him instantly or acts as a psychedelic drug[1] while another attempt does kill him, and thus better off used not for eating.

In addition to eating, the Hero can give food to Abdulla Doo for Puzzle Points, and also to the Bear, which will then allow him passage into the Kobold Wizard.

Quest for Glory II[]

The Hero begins his quest with five Food Rations. He can add to this total by buying lizard jerky from Scoree and Sloree in the Fountain Plaza. They sell jerky in servings of five for one dinar. Bu nonetheless when the Hero leaves for Raseir, he is automatically equipped with 12 more rations.

Food can be given to the caged beast in the desert. This will occupy it so the Hero can take one of its hairs for a Dispel potion.

Quest for Glory III[]

Spim

The Hero begins this quest with 20 Rations of "SPIM" (Special Portion Instant Meals) for rations. While he can't replace SPIM, the Hero can buy different types of rations in the form of Fruit, Dried Fish, or Dried Meat. While technically the Hero can also get and eat Venomous Vine Fruit for free, it is toxic to ingest, and thus better off used not for eating.

Food can also be given to Harami for Honor, or the monkey in Leopardman Chief's Hut.

Quest for Glory IV[]

Ration4

The "Rations" in this quest are Olga Stovich's famous avocado and garlic rations, which are purchased at the General Store for 50 kopeks each.

The Hero needs to use the avocado from his sandwiches in Dr. Cranium's House to bait the T.R.A.P. in order to catch a baby Antwerp.

Quest for Glory V[]

While this quest does not feature rations in the traditional sense, most of the food items can be considered rations, but they must be consumed manually. Incidental text will appear notifying that the Hero is hungry. Fruit, Gyros, and Pizza can all potentially be used as rations.

Trivia[]

  • The SPIM of Quest for Glory 3 is a reference to SPAM[2], a real-life spiced ham meat product, which comes in similarly shaped tins.
