Dryadoak

The Dryad Oak is the main feature, with the Dragon Smoke mountains in the back

The Dryad's Wood (aka Dryad Wood) is a point of interest southwest of Spielburg Valley. It appears in Quest for Glory 1.

Background[]

This oak is found in the southwest corner of the forest through a pass between western mountains and the southern mountains.

This corner of the forest does not seem particularly special visually, except that the trees appear slightly more lush. That said, those who enter are said to have a feeling of oneness with the woods, and feel protected and at peace. A White Stag can sometimes be found grazing in the area. The most prominent plant in the area is a large oak tree. This is the oak tree that The Dryad calls home.

This may be the woods Zara speaks of having lived in when asked about her past (which is said to lie just "beyond the mountains" to the west). The fairies are a people of power, who live in the woods far to the "west" as well as to the east in the Eastern Woods of Mordavia.[1]

In-Game Interactions[]

It sits two screen lengths south and five screen lengths west of the town entrance.

The Hero is led to the Dryad Oak as he will find the White Stag one or two screen lengths east off of it. The stag will bolt off as the Hero approaches, leading him to the Dryad.

When the Hero first enters the area and approaches the oak, the Dryad will appear and ask if he is "one with the forest". Replying "yes" will give the Hero a quest: travel to the Spore-Spitting Spirea, take a seed from them, and return it to her. If the Hero returns with the seed, The Dryad will give the Hero the recipe for a Dispel Potion, as well as one of its ingredients, a Magic Acorn, which will fall from the oak as the Dryad disappears.

The Hero will not be attacked in this area and can sleep here, although it will not give him full restoration.

Trivia[]

  • If the Hero hurts the White Stag, be it with magic or by throwing a dagger or rock at it, the Dryad will punish him the next time she meets him by turning him into a stag, resulting in a premature ending to his adventures.
  • It is possible to eat the Magic Acorn. The Hero says it tastes foul, and it results in a dead end since he cannot finish the story (unless exploiting the glitch that allows movement when meeting the Brigand Leader).
  • The Dryad Oak seems to be immune to damage.
  • If the Hero answers "no" when asked if he is "one with the forest", the Dryad will tell him to come back again after having wandered around the forest, until he answers "yes".
  • When the Hero delivers the Spore-Spitting Spirea seed, the Dryad says "now this will boldly grow where none has grown before", referencing the Star Trek TNG opening sequence[2].
